Privacy policy. This section provides information about the basic steps that you have to follow when you test-sign a driver package. Test-signing refers to using a test certificate to sign a prerelease version of a driver package for use on test computers. In particular, this allows developers to sign kernel-mode binaries by using self-signed certificates, such as those the MakeCert tool generates. This capability allows developers to test kernel-mode binaries on Windows with driver signature verification enabled.

Windows supports test-signed drivers only for development and testing purposes. Test-signed drivers must not be used for production purposes or released to customers. This section includes topics that describe these steps and provide examples, such as the following:.

Set TimeStampServer to the same value that you used in the driver package properties. Set Sign Mode to Production Sign , and set Production Certificate to the same value that you used in the driver package properties. When you are ready to build your driver package, press F5. Visual Studio will automatically sign your package and your driver file.

If you have configured deployment, Visual Studio will also deploy your signed driver package to a test computer. For more information, see Provision a computer for driver deployment and testing WDK 8. After you build your solution, navigate in File Explorer to the folder that contains your driver package.

One of the files in the package is a catalog file. The catalog file contains the digital signature for the package. For an example of viewing the files in a signed package, see Writing a KMDF driver based on a template. If your driver package is signed by WHQL, it can be distributed through the Windows Update program or other Microsoft-supported distribution mechanisms.

Starting in Windows 10, you also need to submit any new Windows 10 kernel mode driver for digital signing on the Windows Hardware Developer Center Dashboard portal. A driver package contains several files. Typically a driver package has one or more driver files, an information file INF file , and a catalog file.

In addition, the kernel-mode code signing policy for bit versions of Windows Vista and later versions of Windows specifies that a kernel-mode driver must be signed for the driver to load. For details, see Driver Signing Policy. For details specific to operating system versions, see Signing requirements by version. Kernel-mode driver binaries embed signed with dual SHA1 and SHA2 certificates from a third party certificate vendor for operating systems earlier than Windows 10 may not load, or may cause a system crash on Windows
