Page Electric Rear Window Defroster Press this button to turn on the rear window defroster and the heated side mirrors if equipped.
The defroster automatically turns off after about 10 minutes of opera- tion. Dots between each of the mode selections identify intermediate modes that allow the occupants to fine tune airflow distribution. Defrost Air is directed to the windshield through the outlets at the base of the windshield.
Use this mode to rapidly cool the inside of the vehicle. The Recirculation mode can also be used to temporarily block out outside odors, smoke, and dust. Window Fogging Interior fogging on the windshield can be quickly re- moved by turning the mode selector to Defrost.
Mud on the windshield may also cause poor operation of this system. Page The operator can override the AUTO mode setting and select the direction of the air by rotating the right mode knob to one of the following positions.
Air is also directed to the front door windows through the side window demister grilles. The defroster automatically turns off after approxi- mately 10 minutes of operation for the first push of the button, and will turn off after approximately 5 minutes for the second push of the button.
To avoid damaging the electrical conductors of the rear window defroster, do not use scrapers, sharp Page Winter Operation Winter Operation Use of the air Recirculation mode during winter months is not recommended because it may cause window fogging.
Vacation Storage Anytime you store your vehicle, or keep it out of service i. Long periods of engine idling, especially at high engine speeds, can cause excessive exhaust tempera- tures which can damage your vehicle.
Do not leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running. Do not leave animals or children inside parked vehicles in hot weather; Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission cannot be started this way.
Un- burned fuel could enter the catalytic converter and once the engine has started, ignite and damage the converter and vehicle. Connect the cord to a standard volt AC electrical outlet with a grounded, three-wire extension cord.
If your foot is not firmly on the brake pedal, the vehicle could accelerate quickly forward or in re- verse. Otherwise, damage to the shifter could result. R Reverse For moving the vehicle rearward. Always stop before moving the lever to R Reverse , except when rocking the vehicle. The trans- mission will operate normally in First, Second and Third while in this range. Unintended movement of a vehicle could injure those in and near the vehicle. As with all vehicles, you should never exit a vehicle while the engine is running.
Before exiting a vehicle you should shift the transmission into Park, remove the key from the ignition, and apply the park brake. Engage only with the vehicle stopped. The PARK position is not intended to serve as a brake when the vehicle is parked. Rather, the driver should always use the parking brake in addition to placing the selector lever in PARK to secure the vehicle.
When the brakes are released, the vehicle can be moved freely pushed or towed. The transmission will shift from the current gear to the next higher gear.
To reset the transmission, use the following procedure: 1. Stop the vehicle. Move the selector lever to the PARK position. Trans- mission engagement may be delayed up to 10 seconds after restart if the key is not cycled to the LOCK position first. Page Stopping For brief stops, leave the transmission in gear and hold the vehicle with the brake pedal. When stopping the vehicle uphill, do not hold it with the accelerator; Autostick allows you to maximize engine brak- ing, eliminate undesirable upshifts and downshifts, and improve overall vehicle performance.
This system can also provide you with more control during passing, city driving, cold slippery conditions, mountain driving, trailer towing, and many other situations. Page Before leaving the vehicle, make sure that the parking brake is fully applied and place the gear selector in the Park position.
Parking Brake To release the parking brake, pull out on the parking brake release located on the left side of the instrument panel. The electronic brake force distribution EBD prevents the rear wheels from over-braking and provides greater control of available braking forces applied to the rear axle. However, the conventional brake system will continue to operate normally if the BRAKE warning light is not on.
If the ABS light is on, the brake system should be serviced as soon as possible to restore the benefits of Anti-Lock brakes. Page Power Steering All vehicle wheels and tires must be the same size and type and tires must be properly inflated to produce accurate signals for the computer.
Tires with white sidewalls will have the full TIN including date code located on the white sidewall side of the tire. Tire and Loading Information Placard This placard tells you important information about the, 1 number of people that can be carried in the vehicle 2 the total weight your vehicle can carry Page Loading The vehicle maximum load on the tire must not exceed the load carrying capacity of the tire on your vehicle.
If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, load from your trailer will be transferred to your vehicle. Consult this manual to determine how this reduces the available cargo and luggage load capacity of your vehicle. Overloading of your tire is dangerous. Overloading can cause tire failure, affect vehicle handling, and increase your stopping distance. Use tires of the recommended load capacity for your vehicle.
Never overload them. Page Tire Inflation Pressures 2. Economy— Improper inflation pressures can cause uneven wear patterns to develop across the tire tread. These abnormal wear patterns will reduce tread life resulting in a need for earlier tire replacement. Underinflation also increases tire rolling resistance and results in higher fuel consumption. After inspecting or adjusting the tire pressure al- ways reinstall the valve stem cap—if equipped. This will prevent moisture and dirt from entering the valve stem, which could damage the valve stem.
High speed driving with your vehicle under maxi- mum load is dangerous. The added strain on your tires could cause them to fail. You could have a serious accident. Page Tread Wear Indicators Tread Wear Indicators Tread wear indicators are in the original equipment tires to help you in determining when your tires should be replaced. Some combina- tions of unapproved tires and wheels may change suspension dimensions and performance charac- teristics, resulting in changes to steering, han- dling, and braking of your vehicle.
This contributes to the safety of the vehicle by significantly reducing the prob- ability of a roadside stop due to a flat tire. Sensors mounted to each wheel as part of the valve stem transmit tire pressure readings to the Receiver Module. The TPM system has been optimized for the original equipment tires and wheels.
TPM system pressures have been established for the tire size equipped on your vehicle. KR5S Canada. Page Snow Tires NOTE: In order to avoid damage to tires, chains, and your vehicle do not drive for a prolonged period of time on dry pavement. Always use the lower suggested operating speed if both the chain manufacturer and vehicle manufacture suggest a maximum speed. More frequent rotation is permis- sible if desired. The reasons for any rapid or unusual wear should be corrected prior to rotation being per- formed.
Page Reformulated Gasoline Over 40 automobile manufacturers around the world have issued and endorsed consistent gasoline specifica- tions the World Wide Fuel Charter, WWFC to define fuel properties necessary to deliver enhanced emissions, engine performance, and durability for your vehicle. The manufacturer recommends the use of gasolines that meet the WWFC specifications if they are available.
Use of additional detergents or other additives are not needed under normal conditions and would result in additional cost. Therefore you should not have to add anything to the fuel. They contain carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas which can kill. Never run the engine in a closed area, such as a garage, and never sit in a parked vehicle with the engine running for an extended period. Damage to the fuel system or emission control system could result from using an improper fuel tank filler tube cap gas cap , and may result in a malfunction indicator light on the instrument clus- ter.
A poorly fitting cap could let impurities into the fuel system. This includes driver, passengers, and cargo. The total load must be limited so that you do not exceed the GVWR. If weighing the loaded vehicle shows that you have exceeded either GAWR, but the total load is within the specified GVWR, you must redistribute the weight. Improper weight distribution can have an adverse effect on the way your vehicle steers and handles and the way the brakes operate.
Before towing a trailer carefully re- view this information to tow your load as efficiently and safely as possible. You might not have brakes when you need them and could have an accident. To engage the Hazard Warning Flashers, depress the switch on the instrument panel. When the Hazard Warn- ing Switch is activated, all directional turn signals will flash on and off to warn oncoming traffic of an emer- gency.
If your air conditioner is on, turn it off. Getting under a jacked-up vehicle is dangerous. The vehicle could slip off the jack and fall on you. You could be crushed. Never get any part of your body under a vehicle that is on a jack.
Never start or run the engine while the vehicle is on a jack. Jack Location The jack is stowed under an access cover in the trunk. Follow these steps to access the jack. NOTE: The spare tire must be removed in order to access the jack. Spare Tire Stowage The spare tire is stowed under an access cover in the trunk.
Follow these steps to access the spare tire. Jacking and Changing a Tire 1. Block the wheel diagonally opposite the flat tire. Passengers should not remain in the vehicle when the vehicle is being jacked.
Remove the spare tire, jack and lug wrench. Before raising the vehicle loosen, but do not remove, the lug nuts of the flat tire using the lug wrench. Turn the wheel nuts counterclockwise one turn while the wheel is still on the ground. Remove the lug nuts, wheel cover if equipped and tire. Remove the cover by hand, do not pry off. Mount the spare tire. For vehicles equipped with wheel covers, see the wheel cover installation instruc- tions.
Tighten the two lug nuts on the mounting studs on each side of the stud which is in alignment with the valve stem. Align the valve notch in the wheel cover with the valve stem on the wheel. Vehicles equipped with an automatic trans- mission cannot be started this way. Unburned fuel could enter the catalytic converter and once the engine has started, ignite and damage the converter and vehicle. Connect one end of the jumper cable to the remote jump start positive battery post A in the engine com- partment.
Connect the other end of the same cable to the positive terminal of the booster battery. Refer to the following illustration for jump starting connections. This phenomenon occurs when there is a difference in the surface traction under the rear driving wheels. Turn your steering wheel right and left to clear the area around the front wheels. Then shift back and forth between Reverse and Drive. The only ap- proved method of towing with out the ignition key is with a flat bed truck.
Proper towing equipment is neces- sary to prevent damage to the vehicle. Page 2. Page 5. This system monitors the performance of the emissions, engine, and automatic transmission control systems. When these systems are operating properly, your vehicle will provide excellent performance and fuel economy, as well as engine emis- sions well within current government regulations.
Failure to pass could prevent vehicle registration. Page Replacement Parts If your OBD system is not ready, you should see your authorized dealer or repair facility. If your vehicle was recently serviced or had a battery failure or replacement, you may need to do nothing more than drive your vehicle as you normally would in order for your OBD system to update.
Besides the maintenance items for which there are fixed maintenance intervals, there are other items that should operate satisfactorily without periodic maintenance. Page Checking Oil Level — 5. Check the oil level at regular intervals, such as every fuel stop. The best time to check the engine oil level is about 5 minutes after a fully warmed engine is shut off or before starting the engine after it has sat overnight.
Change Engine Oil Road conditions and your kind of driving affects the interval at which your oil should be changed. Use Mopar or an equivalent oil meeting the specifi- cation MS Page Engine Oil Filter governmental agency for advice on how and where used oil and oil filters can be safely discarded in your area.
Engine Oil Filter The engine oil filter should be replaced at every engine oil change. Use a filter of this type for replacement. The air cleaner can provide a measure of protection in the case of engine backfire. Do not remove the air cleaner unless such removal is necessary for repair or maintenance.
Make sure that no one is near the engine compartment before starting the vehicle with the air cleaner removed. A hot exhaust system can start a fire if you park over materials that can burn. Such materials might be grass or leaves coming into contact with your ex- haust system.
Do not park or operate your vehicle in areas where your exhaust system can contact any- thing that can burn. Remote battery terminals are located in the engine compartment for jump starting. NOTE: The battery in this vehicle has a vent hose that should not be disconnected and should only be replaced with a battery of the same type vented. Steering Linkage The tie rod end ball joints should be inspected for external leakage or damage when other maintenance is performed.
Always use washer fluid when using the wipers to remove salt or dirt from a dry windshield. Avoid using the wiper blades to remove frost or ice from the windshield. Page Cooling System Whenever a change is noticed in the sound of the exhaust system, when exhaust fumes can be detected inside the vehicle, or when the underside or rear of the vehicle is damaged, have a competent mechanic inspect the com- plete exhaust system and adjacent body areas for broken, damaged, deteriorated, or mispositioned parts.
If coolant is dirty or rusty in appearance, the system should be drained, flushed and refilled with fresh coolant.
